3 QUESTIONS
...about the U.S. Open
The U.S. Open kicked off this week. I asked sports reporter Liz Roscher about what to expect during the tennis season’s last grand slam.
Lily: What’s exciting about the U.S. Open this year?
Liz: The men's singles competition is packed with possible winners — such as Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner — who will give us so much good tennis. For the women, reigning champ Coco Gauff is back after a disappointingly short tournament at the Olympics.
Lily: Which player could have a breakout tournament?
Liz: Keep an eye on Ben Shelton, the 21-year-old American who excels on hard courts and is known for his cheeky personality. He made the semifinals in 2023 and could do even better this year.
Lily: Anything I should make if I’m hosting a watch party with friends?
Liz: Serve the Honey Deuce, the official U.S. Open cocktail. All you need is lemonade, vodka, raspberry liqueur, simple syrup and honeydew melon scooped out to look like tennis balls.
Go deeper: Here are the other big storylines at this year’s U.S. Open.
