The woman shot Saturday morning while Sangamon County Sheriff's Deputies were investigating a possible intruder to a residence in the 2800 block of South Hoover Avenue has been identified.

Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon said in a news release Monday that Sonya Massey, 36, died from a gunshot wound.

Massey was taken by ambulance from her home to HSHS St. John’s Hospital’s emergency room where she was pronounced dead at 1:47 a.m. on Saturday.

The home is in an unincorporated part of the county.

On Sunday, a spokesperson for Sangamon County confirmed that Massey was struck by deputies' gunfire.

The deputies had been summoned to the home at 12:50 a.m. Saturday for a possible break-in. A news release from the county said that deputies reported shots had been fired at approximately 1:21 a.m.

The Illinois State Police hasn't responded to questions from The State Journal-Register about whether deputies thought Massey was the intruder or if other individuals were present.

"The investigation is still open and ongoing," ISP spokesperson Trooper Jayme Bufford said in an email Monday.

There were no other injuries reported.
