Deadly crash involving multiple 18-wheelers, hazardous military materials shuts down I-40 in Monroe County

MONROE COUNTY, Ark. –  A deadly crash involving multiple 18-wheeler trucks has stopped all traffic on Interstate 40 west of Brinkley in Monroe County.

According to a crash report from the Arkansas Department of Transportation, the crash happened just after 5:30 p.m. southwest of Brinkley and involved three 18-wheelers.

The report states that the crash involved hazardous materials. An ARDOT spokesperson said that the materials are “military in nature” and that Department of Defense officials out of Louisiana have been called to respond to the incident.

Officials confirmed at least one death tied to the crash.

Arkansas State Police officials noted that eastbound traffic is being detoured off the interstate at Exit 202 and westbound traffic is being detoured off the interstate at Exit 216.

ASP officials also said a “lengthy” closure is expected on I-40.
