‘Here’s a crazy woman’: Lake Wales woman runs over boyfriend, toddler during argument: sheriff
LAKE WALES, Fla. (WFLA) — A Lake Wales woman was charged with several crimes after she allegedly ran over her boyfriend and child Monday afternoon, according to deputies.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office said Aaliyah Ross, 27, of Lake Wales got into a domestic argument with the victim, named Devon, that escalated when he threw a cinderblock onto her Toyota Corolla.
“It made Aaliyah even madder,” Sheriff Grady Judd said.
Deputies said in response, Aaliyah Ross put two small children, a 4-year-old and a 6-month-old, in the car, got behind the wheel, and lunged forward.
“She lunged again and ran over Devon and her 16-month-old baby,” Judd said.
Surveillance video showed the victim run from Ross before falling behind a fence. The Corolla is then seen running over the man and his child.
“Like bump, bump, bump, run over him,” the sheriff said.
According to Judd, Aaliyah Ross ran the car into a neighbor’s home after hitting her family. Her boyfriend was headed to the hospital when he called the suspect, asking her to take the toddler to the hospital.
“She said no I’m going to leave him at the house,” the sheriff said. “So she drives back to the house and puts the child in the house by himself, and she takes off again.”
The toddler finally got medical attention after his father returned and took him to the hospital. The sheriff’s office said the child was in critical condition “with a broken left shoulder and collar bone, multiple broken ribs, a partially collapsed lung, and abrasions and bruising on his body.”
“Aaliyah Ross made a series of incredibly unthinkable choices Monday: running over a man and a baby with a car, leaving the baby alone, and failing to get medical treatment for the obviously injured baby,” Judd said. “Someone who does this to a baby will do this to anyone—her uncontrollable rage is a threat to the public.”
Deputies tracked the suspect down to her sister’s home in Orlando. Detectives said she told them that she has “acted as if she was going to run over” her boyfriend but would swerve at the last second to avoid running him over.
According to the sheriff’s office, Aaliyah Ross said she thought he would’ve moved out of the way, but he didn’t.
“You wanna talk about crazy? Here’s a crazy woman,” Judd said.
The suspect’s two other children were taken by the Florida Department of Children and Families.
Ross has been charged with aggravated child abuse, aggravated battery-domestic, negligent child abuse, battery-domestic, and leaving the scene of a crash with property damage.
