‘Critical’ need for blood donations ahead of News 19 Back to School Blood Drive

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — Blood donation center LifeSouth says the need for blood donations in North Alabama is “critical.”

“Right now, we need all blood types,” said Becky Cecil, the District Community Development Coordinator for LifeSouth. “We are in a critical need for every one of them.”

News 19 stopped by one of LifeSouth’s local blood donation centers and saw a low supply inside their blood coolers. The organization was especially low on AB Negative, B Negative and O Negative.

On Wednesday, August 7th, News 19 is partnering with LifeSouth and IHeartRadio for our Back to School Blood Drive. The blood drive will take place on the front lawn of the News 19 station, located at 200 Holmes Avenue in Downtown Huntsville.

You can donate between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. inside one of LifeSouth’s four bloodmobiles, which will be parked outside.

LifeSouth says donations made in this area will help supply more than 20 local hospitals in the Huntsville Hospital network.

“If you’re donating here, the blood is staying here,” Cecil said. “If you were to get in an accident or somebody you love in our community needs blood, it’s most likely going to come from us.”

People 17 and older can donate without their parent’s permission. Successful donors will receive an e-gift card.

An appointment isn’t necessary, but if you would like to reserve a time to donate, click here.
