Curious about the construction outside Cordova Mall? Here's what's coming

A national barbecue chain is working on opening its first Pensacola location in Cordova Mall’s parking lot.

A portion of the parking lot has been fenced off for the construction of a new restaurant that, according to a building permit filed with the city of Pensacola, will be a Mission BBQ.

Mission BBQ is an American-barbecue restaurant chain that is based in Maryland and has locations in 19 states across the U.S. Florida has 23 Mission BBQ’s alone, with five more opening soon, including Pensacola’s incoming location.

Here’s what we know about the incoming barbecue restaurant.

Where’s Mission BBQ opening?

Mission BBQ’s Pensacola location will be developed at 5140 N. Ninth Ave and have 5,155 square feet of space, according to the project’s Building Permit from the city of Pensacola.

What is Mission BBQ?

Mission BBQ is an American-barbecue restaurant chain originating in Glen Burnie, Maryland, that started on Sept. 11, 2011.

Before opening Mission BBQ, its owners traveled to multiple Southern states to learn their respective secrets on great barbecue. Mission BBQ makes their food in house and fresh rather than using frozen goods.

What’s on their menu?

Mission BBQ has four sections for entrees in its menu: Meat Market, Smokehouse Signatures, sandwiches and salads. You can make a XL or XXL combo from every section of the menu except for salads, which adds one or two sides and a fountain drink to your order.

You can get entrée-sized portions of barbecue along with a side of bread by ordering from Mission BBQ’s Meat Market section. Mission BBQ offers their brisket, pulled pork and chicken, sausage, as well as turkey for sandwiches and the Meat Market.

If you’re in the mood for a cheeseburger, baby back ribs or even salmon, you’ll want to look at Mission BBQ’s Smokehouse Signatures section.

There are also plenty of sides at Mission BBQ, including fresh-cut fries, baked beans with brisket, coleslaw, green beans with bacon, potato salad and their signature Maggie’s Mac-N-Cheese.

Their sides are made from scratch and can be ordered as a serving, a pint or a quart.

“Pick up packs” are also available if you’re looking to feed more than five people at once, which include two smoked meats, two sides, a choice of bread and one of Mission BBQ’s homemade sauces. An extra-large upgrade adds an additional smoked meat and side to your order.

You can feed as many people as you need with Mission BBQ’s pick up packs, as there’s no cap on the group-size increments that the chain offers. You have to call Mission BBQ to schedule a pick up pack order.

Their kids menu offers extra-cheesy macaroni and cheese, pulled pork, turkey or chicken sliders, as well as junior-portion ribs.

Are there Mission BBQ locations nearby?

There are two Mission BBQ’s open for business in the Panhandle that are located in Panama City and Tallahassee.

Pensacola’s incoming location is one of five restaurants that Mission BBQ is developing across Florida, according to its website. It is also the only location that is currently under construction in the Panhandle.
