AURORA, Colo. (KDVR) — There were some tense moments at Monday’s Aurora City Council meeting as supporters of a fallen resident demanded justice.

Body camera video shows moment Aurora officer shoots, kills suspect

The Aurora Police Department said officers were assisting Denver Police in serving an active warrant for Lewis for an alleged attempted homicide.

Aurora police said after Lewis refused commands, one hand disappeared from view. When that hand reappeared, authorities said he was holding an object. One Aurora officer fired a shot, which would ultimately kill Lewis.

It was later determined that Lewis was holding a cell phone.

“Officers shouldn’t shoot if a person is unarmed,” said Lewis’ mother LaRonda Jones.

Questions raised around deadly Aurora police shooting

At Monday’s city council meeting, Aurora Interim Police Chief Heather Morris offered condolences to the family. Morris added that she could not comment any further on the investigation.

Lewis’ family and supporters said they want the officer who fired the gun arrested and prosecuted, adding that they will take their demands to the federal level, even the White House.
