Detroit Jazz Festival reveals lineup, with three newly anointed Jazz Masters headlining
Earlier this month, the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) bestowed three native Detroiters with its NEA Jazz Masters honor, and all three of those artists — violinist Regina Carter, drummer Louis Hayes and alto saxophonist Kenny Garrett — will headline the 2023 Detroit Jazz Festival this fall, Sept. 1-4 in downtown Detroit.
They join a lineup of top-flight jazz musicians from around the world including Best New Artist Grammy winner Samara Joy and festival artist-in-residence Karriem Riggins, a renowned jazz musician, producer, DJ and Emmy Award winner from Detroit.
“We are extremely excited to feature three newly awarded NEA Jazz Masters — Regina Carter, Louis Hayes and Kenny Garrett, who are also Detroit jazz icons — on the stages of the festival this year,” said Chris Collins, Detroit Jazz Festival Foundation president and artistic director. “Their presence, along with the unique energy and vision of Karriem Riggins, who is also from Detroit, will highlight an incredible showcase of diverse talent and revolutionary jazz from around the world.”
