When is the DNC? Here's what to know after Harris selects Gov. Tim Walz as running mate

Vice President Kamala Harris has selected Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate for her White House bid, less than two weeks before the highly anticipated Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

"As a governor, a coach, a teacher, and a veteran, he's delivered for working families like his," Harris announced on X Tuesday morning. "It's great to have him on the team. Now let’s get to work."

Democrats, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, have already voiced their support for Harris' decision. It came after weeks of speculation about her VP pick after President Biden dropped out of the race for reelection.

"I am honored to be the presumptive Democratic nominee for President of the United States," Harris said on a livestream call after receiving majority votes. "Your dedication cannot be overstated. Your dedication to our country. I know we all feel this way so strongly. We love our country, we believe in the promise of America, and that's what this campaign is about."

She noted that she is looking forward to the DNC to "have an opportunity to celebrate this historic moment together."

When is the DNC?

The DNC will take place in Chicago, Illinois, on August 19-22.

What happens at the DNC?

Democrats throughout the nation will attend the convention, which occurs every four years, to show their support for the presidential and vice presidential nominees. The party is expecting an estimated 50,000 visitors to the Windy City.

This is the first time the convention will be held there since 1996 when former President Bill Clinton was nominated for his second term.

The DNC comes weeks after the Republican National Convention, where Democratic opponents, former president Donald Trump and Sen. JD Vance, gave speeches.

Who is Harris' VP pick, Tim Walz?

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz is a military veteran, former public school teacher, and six-term congressman. He is now serving the sixth year of his eight-year stint as governor of the North Star State.

In naming Walz as her running mate, Harris selected a pro-union Democrat who can speak to the concerns of blue-collar workers in Midwestern states – and beyond.

"It is the honor of a lifetime to join @kamalaharris in this campaign. I’m all in. Vice President Harris is showing us the politics of what’s possible," Walz said in light of the VP announcement. "It reminds me a bit of the first day of school. So, let’s get this done, folks! Join us."

His current X bio reads: "Running to win this thing with @KamalaHarris."
