Doctor Who star Ncuti Gatwa’s new stage revival of The Importance of Being Earnest is getting a UK cinema release next year.

The Fifteenth Doctor actor is set to appear in the National Theatre production of the Oscar Wilde classic for a two-month run from November 20.

Following on from its conclusion on January 25, 2025, it has been confirmed that a filmed version of the show will hit cinemas on February 20 as part of National Theatre Live.

The Importance of Being Earnest follows the story of Jack (played by Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again’s Hugh Skinner) and friend Algy (Gatwa) who both adopt false identities in the hopes of impressing two women, and get caught in a web of lies.

The new production also stars fellow Doctor Who actors Sharon D Clarke and Ronk? Adék?lu??j??, and Little Women’s Eliza Scanlen, and has been directed by Life of Pi’s Max Webster.

It has been quite a stellar year for Gatwa, who aired his first season of Doctor Who in May and June.

Back in July, the actor was also given his own waxwork model at Madame Tussauds, the museum sharing the star’s reaction to his likeness on social media.

Meanwhile, in June the star landed a role in movie The Roses, a remake of The War of the Roses which will also star Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch.

Based on the Warren Adler novel, the story follows couple Ivy (Colman) and Theo (Cumberbatch), whose picture-perfect marriage hides rivalry and resentment that leads to divorce.

The Roses is also set to star Barbie’s Kate McKinnon, Brooklyn Nine-Nine's Andy Samberg, GLOW's Sunita Mani, Love Life's Zo? Chao, Stath Lets Flats' Jamie Demetriou and The Great's Belinda Bromilow.

The Importance of Being Earnest will be released in cinemas on February 20. The play runs at the National Theatre between November 20 and January 25.
