Elbert County bans all types of fireworks ahead of Fourth of July

DENVER (KDVR) — A county southeast of Denver has banned the lighting of any type of fireworks ahead of the Fourth of July holiday.

On Thursday, the Elbert County Office of Emergency Management said an executive order was issued on Tuesday, and stage two burn restrictions are now in place.

Elbert County is made up of Agate, Elizabeth, Elbert, Kiowa, Matheson and Simla.

According to Elbert County, under a stage two burn restriction, almost all fires are banned. There are a few exceptions and those include:

• Use of indoor fireplaces and wood-burning stoves with an approved chimney

• Fires within liquid-fueled or gas-fueled stoves, grills, fire pits, or other gas or liquid-fueled appliances

• Residential use of charcoal grill fires and smokers

• Fire suppression or fire department training fires

• Discharge of firearms

So, this means all fireworks of any type and brand are now banned in the county.

FOX31 reached out to the office of emergency management to ask how long this ban is expected to be in place and if the ban will impact city-run fireworks shows. This story will be updated when that information becomes available.

According to the Colorado Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, Elbert County isn’t the only one under a burn restriction. Las Animas, Lincoln and Montezuma County have some type of fire restriction in place. Be sure to check with local authorities on any bans before lighting fireworks.
