Elmo’s Tour of Sesame Street: Then and Now

Sesame Street has undergone a number of changes for its 46th season: a new network (HBO); character (Nina, a bilingual Hispanic woman, to be voiced by Suki Lopez); format (30 minutes instead of an hour); an updated theme song, and a completely refreshed set.

Elmo moved to the ground floor of 123 Sesame Street, and debuts a new bedroom this season where segments will be taped often. “It’s really cool,” the 3-½-year-old tells Yahoo Parenting. Longtime watchers may recognize Elmo’s new bedroom as Susan and Gordon’s former apartment.

The only downside of Elmo’s move? Oscar the Grouch moved right underneath his window, “so Elmo can never open his window,” Elmo says. Oscar will move all over the set of Sesame Street, sometimes trading his garbage cans for composting bins and recycling bins.

Abby Cadabby has a new garden, which she calls “amazing.” Pieces of old buildings were recycled to make the community garden.

Big Bird’s nest is in a tree for the first time. “It’s so pretty,” says Abby, while Elmo adds that it’s “spacious.”

Mr. Hooper’s store gets a very retro makeover and a bright neon sign.

As for the changes, Elmo and Abby are taking them in stride. Says Elmo, “The good thing about changes is that sometimes they bring up new things that you never knew you could do before.”
