Family, MPD celebrate officer killed in crash

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Police held a vigil Sunday night to show solidarity and support for the loved ones of a Memphis Police officer who was killed on the job this week.

A candlelight vigil was held to honor Officer Demetrice Johnson, who was killed in a crash on Friday morning. Those who knew Johnson say his impact will last a lifetime.

“I’m kind of numb to everything,” said Johnson’s wife Chosen. “This is a journey. My life just changed forever.”

Johnson was a dedicated public servant, and his loss is deeply felt. Sunday, friends, family, and fellow officers gathered to celebrate his life and service.

Chosen expressed what she will miss most about Johnson.

“I miss him, just the small things,” she said. “It was always the small things for us. Just home walking through the door, him playing music, above all his smile.”

WREG was able to connect Johnson’s mother and family in Texas with Interim Memphis Police Chief CJ Davis at the vigil.

“There’s a crowd of his fellow friends and colleagues here supporting the family and Chosen, trying to hold her up,” Davis said. “Just know when you get here, we’re here for you.”

“Memphis Police Department took care of him,” Chosen said. “They handled business today, and this is absolutely beautiful. I’ve seen pictures of it. To be here to witness what has been done is simply mind-blowing.”

Johnson’s mother says her family will travel to Memphis when funeral arrangements are made.
