‘Food, Hygiene, Safety’ Violations Found During Surprise Check-Ins Of Senior Care Facilities

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – New Mexico Health authorities shared some alarming results from surprise visits conducted at several long-term care facilities. Elderly residents shared concerns through a survey about staff shortages, unappetizing food, hygiene concerns, and lack of physical activities.

In one case, staff at a senior care facility lost track of an elderly resident during a surprise visit from the state. So what’s being done about it? Department of Health Secretary Patrick Allen joins Gabby to discuss how the survey worked, and what the state is doing with the results.

“Long gone are the days where we’re not paying attention because it’s COVID,” Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham said during a press conference announcing results of the surprise survey.

“Long gone are the days where we’re looking in the window,” she added. “We’re coming in and we expect the conditions to be a hell of a lot better than they are today in New Mexico.”
