Giant Eagle stabbing suspect Bionca Ellis in court

CLEVELAND (WJW) – Bionca Ellis, the woman charged with killing a toddler outside a North Olmsted grocery store, appeared in court for a pre-trial on Tuesday morning.

Ellis was recently indicted in the fatal stabbing of Julian Wood outside a Giant Eagle.

The I-Team revealed Ellis had been released from jail days earlier after a probation violation when a Rocky River judge did not follow through with a recommendation to get Ellis a psychological exam.

In previous appearances, Ellis has acted oddly in court. She was seen on police video making faces, asking to be arrested and trying to answer a judge in Spanish.

During her court appearance on Tuesday, Ellis had her head down while her legal counsel told the judge she is not able to stand trial at this point.

Prosecutors then requested that Ellis be referred to a court-ordered psychiatric clinic.

The next court hearing has been set for Aug. 13. Cuyahoga County prosecutors have not announced whether or not they will seek the death penalty.

On Aug. 13, the court will decide the next steps in Ellis’s trial.
