Grand Isle mayor orders evacuations, some mandatory

GRAND ISLE, La. (WGNO) — As Tropical Storm Francine heads toward Louisiana’s coast, Grand Isle’s mayor is preparing the town by calling for mandatory and voluntary evacuations.

Most of the Louisiana coast will be on the eastern side of the hurricane on Wednesday, meaning storm surge will be a growing concern for coastal communities.

As of 11 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 9, Mayor David Camardelle has called for a voluntary evacuation. A mandatory evacuation has been issued for campers, RVs and cargo and boat trailers.

Grand Isle School is also canceled for Tuesday, Sept. 10.
