HURLBURT FIELD — An active-duty airman stationed at Hurlburt Field has died after injuries sustained during a deputy-involved shooting on Friday.
According to a 1st Special Operations Wing release, the man who died is 23-year-old U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Roger Fortson. He was assigned to the 4th Special Operations Squadron and entered active duty on Nov. 19, 2019.
The incident stems from a disturbance call that the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office responded to about 4:30 p.m. on May 3. When deputies arrived on the scene, Fortson brandished a gun in an encounter with a deputy. The deputy then opened fire in an act of self-defense, according to the sheriff's office.
Fortson was taken to a local hospital, where he later died. The deputy in question has been placed on paid administrative leave, as is standard in such cases, pending the results of an investigation.
