Incoming Maneuver Center of Excellence commander assumes post

FORT MOORE, Ga. (WRBL) — Friday morning, leadership of the Maneuver Center of Excellence (MCoE) officially changed hands. As Maj. Gen. Curtis Buzzard handed over the MCoE banner to Maj. Gen. Colin Tuley at an official change of command ceremony, a new era at Fort Moore began.

“A lot of times I’ll tell folks, ‘Every day is an assessment,’” Tuley said in his first remarks as MCoE commander.

The new commanding general showed a sense of humor as he regaled the audience with a story of the morning’s events. He started with Thursday night and telling his family to come by in the morning to go to the ceremony, held in McGinnis-Wickham Hall, in a convoy.

Medal of Honor recipient Ralph Puckett and his wife, Jeannie, had profound impact on new Fort Moore commander

The next morning, the MCoE commander-to-be had to do some quick thinking.

“I realized I gave no plan; I didn’t even make a plan. We did not rehearse anything; we did not talk anything: we were winging it,” said Tuley. He continued, “I go, ‘This could go well, or, it could not go well.’”

After some game-time decisions, it was clear Tuley’s convoy made it to the ceremony in one piece, ready to take on their new roles within the Fort Moore community.

And Tuley will need to be ready.

Fort Moore trains 60,000 soldiers each year, preparing them for an ever-changing type of warfare, including continuing integration and development of drone technology.

With ongoing conflict in the Indo-Pacific, Asia and the Middle East, Tuley acknowledged a looming pressure as he takes on his new position.

“The urgency is there each and every day,” Tuley said. “Each and every day we’ve got to wake up on the balls of our feet looking at how do we train our leaders, how do we prepare our soldiers for these potentials, and can’t be by sitting on the heels of your feet.”

Tuley is a graduate of the Citadel Military College, the Command and General Staff College and the U.S. Army War College Fellowship at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. He most-recently served as Deputy Commanding General of the XVIII Airborne Coprs and Fort Liberty.

The new MCoE commanding general has also deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Freedom’s Sentinel.

He takes over his new post from Buzzard, who will continue onto what he said will be his final Army post. It was announced during the ceremony by Lt. Gen. Maria Gervais that Buzzard’s last assignment will be with Security Assistance Group Ukraine, based in Germany.
