An Iowa City officer discharged their weapon Monday, injuring one along Wylde Green Road

An Iowa City police officer discharged their firearm Monday morning, injuring one.

The situation arose when police received a call about an "armed suicidal subject" in the 1100 block of Wylde Green Road around 8:40 a.m. on July 15.

An officer allegedly discharged their firearm at the scene, injuring one person. The person was being treated at an area hospital as of Monday.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation has been notified and will investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Any findings will also be relayed to the Johnson County Attorney's Office.

ICPD officer put on paid leave

The officer who discharged their firearm has been placed on paid administrative leave until the investigation is finished.

According to the Iowa City Police Department's guidelines on officer-involved shootings, police may consult with a "representative" of their choosing or an attorney during the course of the investigation and may voluntarily provide a statement to investigators. However, officers can't meet with a representative or lawyer before being interviewed.

Iowa City Police said that they will not release additional information during the investigation.

Body camera footage, if available, also will not be released until the investigation wraps, according to the ICPD's officer-involved shooting guidelines.
