It's a new year and month, but when are the January holidays and events? Here are the dates to look out for this month, including when the national day of mourning is.
In total, there are 12 federal holidays in 2025 across 11 days, and 3 of those holidays fall in January, according to to the Office of Personnel Management, OPM.
Not included in the list is the national day of mourning following former President Jimmy Carter's death, which Joe Biden declared will be held on Jan. 9th, prompting organizations to close in observance of the day.

Here are the dates of January's federal holidays, according to the OPM:
Wednesday, Jan. 1: New Year’s Day
Monday, Jan. 20: Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.
Monday, Jan. 20: Inauguration Day
When is the national day of mourning?
The national day of mourning is on Thursday, Jan. 9.
When is Inauguration Day?
Inauguration Day is on Monday, Jan. 20.
President-Elect Donald Trump will be sworn into office at noon on this day.
When is Martin Luther King Jr. Day?
Martin Luther King Jr. Day occurs on Monday, Jan. 20.

Are MLK Day and Inauguration Day on the same day?
Yes. Inauguration Day and MLK Day, which falls on the third Monday of January, will happen on the same day.
Which holidays are bank holidays?
Only New Year's Day and Martin Luther King Day are considered holidays, according to the New York State's website.
While the national day of mourning is not listed as a bank holiday, organizations have started announcing they will be closed that day.
The following organizations will be closed to honor Carter:
Federal offices, as ordered by Biden
The New York Stock Exchange
Nasdaq
The Supreme Court
The United States Postal Service is also expected to close in observance of the former president's death as it did during the last national day of mourning in December 2018, when President George H. W. Bush died.
