Jefferson Parish leaders give update on Francine recovery

JEFFERSON PARISH, La. (WGNO) — As of 4 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 12, officials with Jefferson Parish offered an update on parish recovery efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Francine.

All government buildings in the parish will remain closed through Friday, Sept. 13. Jefferson Parks and Recreation Department facilities and libraries will continue their regular programming on Saturday, Sept. 14.

New Orleans leaders give update on Francine recovery

The conservation notice for Jefferson Parish remains in effect due to the recent heavy rains and sewer infiltration by Hurricane Francine. To minimize strain on the parish sewerage system, residents are asked to limit non-essential water usage, such as washing dishes and doing laundry.

Sheltering at Terrytown Playground stopped at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Bright Playground, at 3401 Cleary Ave., in Metairie, is now open for residents who need shelter. Those who need assistance can call the Jefferson Parish Emergency Operations Center at 504-349-5360 or the Jefferson Parish Medical Needs Registry at 504-323-1818.

Garbage collection is planned to resume on Friday, and drop-off sites will reopen as well. Tipper carts should have their lids closed and should be placed away from anything else to allow trash to be taken quickly. Bags should also be placed away from loose debris.

Jefferson Parish transit and paratransit services were restored at 8:40 a.m. on Thursday. Same-day services won’t be provided to other parishes until roads are confirmed to be clear and safe. Buses will travel more slowly and treat main intersections as four-way stops as safety precautions.

The Jefferson Parish Animal Welfare Services Shelter, located at 2701 Lapalco Boulevard, in Harvey, will remain closed on Friday. Call 504-349-5536 or 504-880-7194 after hours to report an animal control incident.
