Jefferson Parish officials discuss Tropical Storm Francine

JEFFERSON PARISH, La. (WGNO) — Jefferson Parish officials gather together on Monday, Sept 9 to discuss preparation and response to Tropical Storm Francine.

Tropical Storm Francine is currently set to make landfall on Wednesday, Sept. 11. as a potential category 2 hurricane, which has prompted responses from government officials in Louisiana.

Mandatory evacuation issued for Zone 1 of Terrebonne Parish

Following the press conference, Jefferson Parish government officials released more details.

All Jefferson Parish government facilities will be closed on Wednesday, Sept. 11. All Jefferson Parks and Recreation Department and library programming will also be suspended, beginning on Tuesday, Sept. 10.

Parish President Cynthia Lee Sheng also issued a mandatory evacuation for those in Jefferson Parish who are outside of the levee protection system, including Grand Isle and Laffite. The issuance was reportedly due to a “potentially life-threatening storm surge.”

The National Weather Service advised that those in mobile homes should seek alternative shelter in a more sturdy building with family and friends. The Terrytown Playground, located at 641 Heritage Ave., will open at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 10, for anyone in need of sturdy shelter.

Garbage collection and public transit will both be suspended on Wednesday, Sept. 11. If winds reach a sustained 35 mph, all transit and paratransit services will stop providing service across the Crescent City Connection and will not continue until sustained wind speeds have fallen. Floodgate closures occurring in response to Tropical Storm Francine

The Jefferson Parish Animal Welfare Services Shelter, located at 2701 Lapalco Boulevard, in Harvey, will be closed on Tuesday and Wednesday.
