Kamala Harris, Liz Cheney to campaign in Oakland County on Monday
Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris will be back in Michigan on Monday evening for a campaign event in Oakland County with Republican former U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming.
The Harris campaign announced Saturday that Harris would have a series of moderated conversations that day with Cheney, a former member of House GOP leadership who broke with former President Donald Trump for trying to overturn the results of the 2020 election he lost to President Joe Biden and what she and others considered his role in fomenting the attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, as Congress met to certify those results.
Cheney has endorsed Harris for president this year. She and Harris were set to hold public discussions in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan on Monday as part of the leadup to the Nov. 5 general election in which Harris faces Trump.
No other details were immediately available about the event with Cheney in Oakland County, other than that it would take place in the evening.
Oakland County is the second largest county in Michigan and has trended more Democratic in recent years. Winning over suburban voters in large numbers could be key to Harris winning Michigan, a key battleground state, and highlighting Cheney's support is a way of reaching out to mainstream Republicans who may unsure about backing Trump.
The trip comes at a time when both campaigns have been showering Michigan with a ton of attention. Harris spent the night in Michigan last week before taping a radio program with host Charlemagne tha God and then held three events crisscrossing the state on Friday and had another event planned for Saturday. Trump also had three events in Michigan on Friday, a little over a week since speaking to the Detroit Economic Club.
Harris is expected back in Michigan next Saturday as well for an event with former first lady Michelle Obama on the first day of early voting statewide.
