Kamala Harris to return to metro Detroit on Labor Day
Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee for president, will return to metro Detroit for a campaign event on Labor Day, the White House confirmed on Tuesday.
Earlier, two Democratic sources with knowledge of the event had told the Free Press that Harris would be in Detroit on Monday, speaking on condition of anonymity because the event and its details had not been released publicly.
Harris' visit to Michigan next Monday will be her first since formally accepting the Democratic nomination at last week's convention in Chicago, though she has made several trips to the state as vice president this year.
Meanwhile, the Republican ticket has been busy trying to shore up support in the state, with former President Trump, the GOP nominee, addressing the National Guard Association of the United States in Detroit on Monday of this week and returning to Potterville for an event on Thursday.
On Tuesday, Trump's vice presidential running mate, U.S. Sen. JD Vance of Ohio, was in Big Rapids discussing a local project's ties to China and working to boost enthusiasm for the GOP ticket.
Michigan is expected to be one of a handful of swing states that will decide this November's election, with Trump having won it narrowly in 2016 before losing to President Joe Biden in 2020. Trump had widely been seen as leading in the state in the polls this year until Biden stepped aside as the Democratic nominee and endorsed Harris, who has closed the gap with Trump, if not pulled slightly ahead, in more recent polling.
Harris, the first Black woman and first woman of South Asian descent to become a major party nominee for president, last visited metro Detroit on Aug. 7, speaking to a crowd of thousands at Detroit Metro Airport.
Following the event in metro Detroit, Harris is expected to travel to Pittsburgh for an event with Biden.
