Keep your pets calm during fireworks
Jul. 1—LENOIR — Fireworks are captivating — the thunderous boom then flashes of multicolored lights followed by a splash of sparkles is thrilling to experience.
While the boom and bright lights of fireworks may generate feelings of excitement for humans, some animals have a different reaction. Animals are sensitive to sound and flashes of light, and the explosion of fireworks can create panic, anxiety, and stress.
Richard Gilliland, director of the Caldwell County Animal Enforcement Division, offered a few proactive suggestions pet owners can take to keep their pets calm.
"Take your dog inside the house so your dog has a safe haven where they are comfortable away from fireworks," said Gilliland. "This keeps them from running away and from getting burned by the fireworks."
Gilliand said that, like humans, pets suffer burns from fireworks during the Fourth of July season. Taking your pets indoors reduces or eliminates the risk of injury.
Dogs who become panicked may take off running. Gilliland suggested that pet owners make sure their pet has proper identification on it, so it can be easily reunited with its owner.
Playing white noise in the house on a sound system or TV may mask the sound of fireworks.
Have the animals favorite comfort item, like a blanket or toy, on hand. In addition, pet owners can be prepared to offer chew or squeeze toys to distract their pet's mind away from the fireworks.
Pet owners can create an indoor safe haven for their pets. A safe haven offers a place where the pet can hide. This may help prevent injury of pets who become overly anxious and may try to escape the home by attempting to break through doors or windows.
In addition to keeping the family pets healthy and safe, there are steps one can take to protect wildlife. Those setting off home fireworks may consider removing debris following a home fireworks show. According to the Humane Society, fireworks pose health risks for wild animals as some animals may consume the casings and remnants as food.
