Kodiak Waffle Recall: Is Your Favorite Breakfast Item Affected by Plastic Contamination?
Even breakfast staples are joining the growing list of recalled items this year.. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a voluntary Kodiak Waffle recall on September 13 due to the presence of plastic contamination in the products. Curious if your waffles were affected? Read on to learn more about the FDA recall of Kodiak Protein Waffles and how to stay safe.
Kodiak Waffle recall: Everything you need to know about the plastic contamination
Utah-based company Kodiak Cakes LLC — known for its healthier breakfast items — declared a voluntary recall for 7,300 boxes of Kodiak Protein-Packed Power Waffles, Buttermilk and Vanilla. The FDA issued the alert on September 13 and items were removed due to the presence of soft plastic film.
In this case, the FDA highlights a voluntary recall as an “action that takes place because manufacturers and distributors carry out their responsibility to protect the public health and well-being from products that present a risk of injury or gross deception or are otherwise defective.”
Multiple states had to remove waffle boxes from their stores including Kansas, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin.
What to look for during the Kodiak Waffle recall
In addition to the flavor and brand of waffles, knowing exactly which items have been called for removal is key to staying safe.
The recalled waffles have the UPC ‘705599019203’ on their boxes, expire on January 10, 2026, and come in 53.6 oz containers or 40-count boxes. This recall is identified as class II by the FDA meaning “use of, or exposure to, the product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences, or an outcome where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”
Many of the Kodiak Waffle boxes were bought from Costco
Costco sells the waffles in 40-count boxes and recently issued a letter apologizing to customers who purchased them for “any inconvenience caused.”
At the time of the recall, no injuries or illnesses were reported from the affected waffles, but shoppers can return them to Costco for a full refund. “The quality, safety and integrity of our products is our number one priority at Kodiak,” wrote Lauren Breaux, the company’s Senior Director of Food Safety and Quality Assurance.
According to the letter, products bought between July 15 and August 25 were all included in the recall. Only the buttermilk and vanilla option is affected at this time.
Anyone else who bought the waffles from Costco or elsewhere can call Kodiak’s customer service line at (801) 328-4067, (which is available 24/7) or email [email protected] for any additional assistance they may require.
Kodiak Cakes LLC products are widely distributed
The family-owned company is based in Utah and only 13 states were affected by the recent recall. However, products from the brand are widely distributed.
Kodiak Cakes LLC is also known for its whole-grain pancake and waffle mixes, but they have items that are good for protein intake, single-serving options and healthier snacks. None of their other merchandise was affected by the waffle recall.
If you purchased Kodiak buttermilk and vanilla protein waffles, do not consume them. Discard the product to avoid potential health risks.
