The It List: Is the new ‘Joker’ movie a musical or what?

The 2019 Joker movie was originally supposed to be a one-off — but after it earned more than $1 billion at the global box office, a “musical” sequel was announced in 2022. In recent weeks, however, writer-director Todd Phillips has qualified that music is just an “essential element” in Joker: Folie à Deux, in which Lady Gaga as Harleen “Lee” Quinzel co-stars alongside Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck.
