Reactions to the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade
The Supreme Court on Friday overturned Roe v. Wade, its 1973 decision that legalized abortion nationwide.
In a 6-3 ruling on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the nation's high court concluded that the Constitution does not guarantee a right to abortion, in one of the most momentous and controversial decisions of the last few decades.
At the White House, President Biden called it “a sad day for the court and for the country,” and warned the “health and life of women in this nation are now at risk.”
Former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama released scathing statements blasting what she described as a "horrifying decision." Former President Donald Trump praised the ruling, telling Fox News that “this is something that will work out for everybody.”
On Capitol Hill, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi accused congressional Republicans of seeking a nationwide ban on abortion.
“The Republicans are plotting a nationwide abortion ban,” Pelosi said. “They cannot be allowed to have a majority in the Congress to do that. But that’s their goal.”
