United States Army veteran Carl Smith, who was deployed in Vietnam in 1970, was awarded a Purple Heart at a ceremony in Fort Collins Friday. U.S. Rep. Joe Neguse, D-Boulder, presented the honor to Smith and pinned the medal.

The military decoration is given to those who have been wounded or killed while serving in the country's armed forces.

“It is one of the most recognized and respected medals awarded to members of the United States Armed Forces. I am humbled, as I know we all are to be in the presence of one such individual, a local hero, Carl Smith,” Neguse said.
