Local WWII veterans remember D-Day

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — Mesa County Libraries started interviewing local war veterans in 2014 to preserve their first-hand experiences in war. The ongoing project is called Veterans Remember.

This project includes some who fought in Normandy, France on D-Day.

We were told that the invasion of Europe was the beginning of the end of the war and that what we were going to do was a necessary first step…and that we should be very proud to be a part of it. And we were.

Jim Stafford, WWII paratrooper

During World War II Jim Stafford was a paratrooper. In his interview with Mesa County Libraries’ Bob Kretschman, he described what he did on June 6, 1944. He started with the plane ride, then parachuted down, and built foxholes for protection once on the ground.

Stafford is only one of more than a dozen United States veterans interviewed by Mesa County Libraries.

You can watch the full interview with Jim Stafford here. The other full-length interviews are available in the Mesa County Libraries archive and on YouTube.
