Man shot following argument with security guard in Downtown New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The New Orleans Police Department is investigating a shooting in Downtown New Orleans that left a person wounded.

“First thing this morning we got this going on on Canal Street,” said tourist Steve Hawkins.

Shots rang out about 9:30 a.m. near the corner of Canal and Carondelet streets near Adler’s Jewelry of New Orleans. The alleged shooter was a security guard.

“The security guard and the gentlemen were involved in an altercation, subsequently leading to the security guard firing one shot. The security guard was not arrested,” said NOPD Communications Director Reese Harper.

One woman we spoke to at the scene says she knows the security guard. She describes him as a good guy and one who would only react in self defense.

“He is the best security outside on these streets of New Orleans. That’s the man. He is not a quick shooter. That had to be one that was after him,” said the woman.

With several big events, including Super Bowl 59 set to take place in the next few months, some tourists believe this incident is another bad look for the city.

“It’s too early in the morning for this. And this is a great city. Super Bowl is coming they are cleaning it up. We can’t have this. Glad to see NOPD on it. Clean this city up quickly so we can get back to the good times people come here for,” said Hawkins.

However, other tourists tell us that they know to always be cautious.

“We got a lot planned today. We are going to see some historic sites and things. We are not going to be deterred by this particular incident. We are just going to be careful, keep our witts, and enjoy the city,” said tourist Kesha Person.

NOPD officers said that the guard was not detained or facing charges as they report he is not a threat to the public.

The investigation remains ongoing.
