Maricopa County Board of Supervisors will remain firmly under GOP control. What that means
The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, which has long been a Republican stronghold in battleground Arizona, will remain in Republican hands once all votes from the 2024 general election are counted.
Before November, Republicans held a 4-1 supermajority on the board. But with two supervisors retiring, and a third incumbent defeated in the primaries, Democrats saw this as their best chance to win seats on the board. Instead, three reliably Republican seats remained on the GOP's column.
But as election watchdog reporter Sasha Hupka tells The Briefing, Democrats still have a slim chance at flipping one of the seats. The District 3 race between Republican Kate Brophy McGee and Democrat Daniel Valenzuela appeared to be headed to an automatic recount, given the handful of votes that separates the two.
The Briefing, hosted by Arizona Republic reporter Rafael Carranza, explores news and issues through interviews with other reporters and newsmakers in a fast-paced, easy-to-digest format.
The Briefing publishes on azcentral.com and YouTube, where The Arizona Republic’s audience has grown to nearly 130,000 followers.
The Briefing is just one layer of The Republic's coverage of politics and the 2024 election.
