New Mexico Secretary of State urges Elon Musk to fix chatbot election misinformation
NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Five secretaries of state are urging Elon Musk to fix an artificial 9intellgivcent chatbot on the social media platform X saying it is spreading election misinformation. New Mexico Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver and four other secretaries from Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Washington wrote to Musk.
They say that the platform’s artificial intelligence chatbox, known as Grok, produced false information about state ballot deadlines shortly after President Joe Biden dropped out of the 2024 presidential race. The letter stated that while Grok is available to premium subscribers of X, the misinformation was shared across multiple social platforms and has reached millions of people.
A spokesperson for Secretary Toulouse Oliver’s Office said in a statement:
I can say, though, that the Secretary signed on to this letter because she feels it is critical to combat election misinformation wherever it shows up. And we want to emphasize that New Mexicans should always seek out trusted sources of election information, like their county clerks or the Secretary of State’s Office, and to not share or repost election information until they are sure it’s correct.”
