Milwaukee RNC forecast: Temps in the mid-90s, heat advisory in effect Sunday
The Republican National Convention is expected to continue as planned in Milwaukee, though likely with beefed-up security, following an assassination attempt on Donald Trump Saturday evening at a Pennsylvania rally that left the former president with an injured ear and at least one bystander dead.
Convention delegates arriving today will be met with unseasonably warm weather for Wisconsin. According to the National Weather Service, Milwaukee is expected to see a high of 92 degrees around 4 p.m., with heat indices in the 90s between 1 and 7 p.m. Moderate-high humidity is in the forecast throughout the day. The day's peak heat index could touch 100 degrees.
A heat advisory has been issued for Milwaukee, Racine, Kenosha, Walworth and Rock counties; the advisory is in effect Sunday from 2 to 7 p.m. Temperatures will be around 88 degrees, with a heat index of 94, when the RNC's invite-only "Red, White and Brew" welcome party kicks off at the Henry Maier Festival Park at 6 p.m.
Will it rain in Milwaukee today?
Showers and thunderstorms are possible in the Milwaukee area late Sunday afternoon through the early evening, with the highest chances between 7 and 10 p.m., according to NWS. Precipitation chances peak near 40% between 7 and 9 p.m. Lightning and winds are the main threats; heavy rain and hail are also possible, the weather service says.
Storms could interrupt the "Red, White and Brew" welcome party, which is scheduled from 6 to 10 p.m.
NWS said Sunday morning there is "lots of uncertainty" about the location of the evening's storms. "They may end up tracking farther north or south" and miss the Milwaukee area.
Hot weather safety tips
Hot weather can cause heat-related illness and even death. The Milwaukee Health Department and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offer these hot weather safety tips:
Slow down and limit physical activity.
Spend time in air-conditioned spaces such as shopping malls, movie theaters or libraries.
Don't leave kids or pets in a parked car. Temperatures can become life-threatening within minutes.
Wear lightweight, loose-fitting and light-colored clothing.
Take cool baths or showers. Use wet towels on your skin to cool down.
Don't rely on fans as primary cooling devices.
Drink plenty of water.
Avoid consuming caffeinated or alcoholic beverages, which can increase heat effects.
