Most Los Angeles district schools to reopen Monday as fires continue to burn

LOS ANGELES ? Most Los Angeles Unified School District students are set to return to campus Monday as fires still burn across the Southland, according to an announcement by the district Sunday.
The announcement from LAUSD Superintendent Alberto Carvalho states that the district considered factors including improved fire containment, air quality, wind conditions and staffing in the decision.
"The District is able to resume school schedules and instruction thanks to the tireless work of District employees who cleaned schools, as well as first responders and local authorities who ensured the safety of our school communities," the letter said.
The district remained open on Wednesday, a day after the deadly fires broke out, but closed for the remainder of the week.
The district will keep eight schools closed in "the highest impact areas," and said it is monitoring two schools: Roscomare Road Elementary School and Community Magnet Charter.
Pasadena Unified School District announced Friday that it would be closed through Jan. 17.
The LAUSD letter states that it will publish an update at 10 p.m. PT and monitor conditions overnight. Any overnight changes will be communicated to families and employees by 5:30 a.m. PT.
Open schools will be on inclement weather schedule, which limits outdoor activities.
The fires have killed at least 16 people and sent over 100,000 people from their homes under evacuation orders with another 87,000 told to be ready, if they haven't already fled. Nearly 40,000 acres of land has burned in the firestorm as of Sunday, according to CalFire.
