Mother of 14-year-old killed in Aurora shooting speaks out

AURORA, Colo. (KDVR) — Police continue to search for the person who shot and killed a teenage girl in Aurora over the weekend.

A teenager who was at that party told FOX31 on Monday that information about the park party was spread on social media.

Aurora police circled Highland Hollows Park Saturday night where the teen was killed at around 9:15 p.m. She has been identified as Kamiaya Cleveland, 14.

“We love Kamiaya and miss her so much. Any information anyone has that may be helpful please let us know! We need justice for Kamiaya!!” the 14-year-old’s mother, Krystal Cleveland, told FOX31 in a statement.

Kamiaya Cleveland, 14, was shot and killed at a party on July 6, 2024, in Aurora.

One teen who was at the party told FOX31 there was trouble at the party early on.

“I left, and then a few minutes later people texted me talking about are you OK?  They said a fight broke out and there’s been a shooting,” said the teen, who did not want to be identified.

There were at least 100 girls in one area, according to the Struggle of Love Foundation. A 14-year-old and a 15-year-old girl were also hurt during the shooting.

The weekend’s violence was discussed on Brother Jeff’s “Let’s Talk” show late Monday afternoon.

“We want to begin this show in honor of a young life gone too soon. I already see the T-shirt (saying) forever 14,” Brother Jeff said.

Guests on the show said deadly violence among teens has become alarmingly too commonplace. Community members are concerned violence among teens will only grow worse this summer.

“I think in terms of youth violence prevention and what’s going on, it all needs to be scrapped and we have got to go back to the drawing board,” Struggle of Love Foundation Violence Interruption Supervisor Jason McBride said.

McBride said more programs are needed to get teens jobs as well as safe places to hang out. Brother Jeff said a memorial is now being planned for Cleveland.

Aurora Police continue asking anyone with info about the shooting to call Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867 or submit a tip online.
