Find out which municipalities in the Columbus area permit fireworks

Before you shoot red, white and blue sparks into starry skies, check your location.

In 2021, Gov. Mike DeWine signed a bill that legalized in-state ignition of firecrackers, Roman candles and other consumer-grade fireworks on these holidays:

• New Year’s Eve

• New Year's Day

• Chinese New Year

• Cinco de Mayo

• Memorial Day weekend

• Juneteenth

• July 3, 4, and 5, and the Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays before and after

• Labor Day weekend

• Diwali

But a provision in the law gives municipalities the freedom to continue banning firework use in their territories. Additionally, towns and cities can limit the state-legislated dates and times for which use is permitted.

Here, you can find where municipalities in greater Columbus stand on lighting up fireworks.

Where you are allowed to set off fireworks

• Columbus allows fireworks to be possessed, discharged ignited or explored, but only with the written approval of the city's fire department.

• New Albany permits firework purchase and use on all state-approved holidays, which include Memorial Day weekend, Juneteenth and days surrounding July 4.

• Powell allows firework discharge on most of the state-approved holidays, including Memorial Day and July 3-5. However, firework sale is still banned.

• Reynoldsburg permits fireworks, but only on Independence Day.

• Upper Arlington allows the use of fireworks for those who have paid a $3,500 city permit fee.
