Nancy Mace introduces resolution targeting first transgender member of House Sarah McBride

WASHINGTON - The transgender bathroom debate has made its way to Congress.
South Carolina Republican Rep. Nancy Mace introduced a resolution on Monday to ban transgender women from using the women's restrooms at the Capitol, less than a month after Democrat Sarah McBride of Delaware was elected as the first openly transgender woman to Congress.
The resolution prohibits “members, officers, and employees of the House from using single-sex facilities other than those corresponding to their biological sex, and for other purposes.” It drew backlash from Democrats and support from some Republicans as McBride is set to be sworn in in January.
Mace told reporters that McBride “doesn’t get a say.”
In response, McBride wrote on X, formerly Twitter, that the resolution was a “blatant attempt from far right-wing extremists to distract from the fact that they have no real solutions to what Americans are facing.”
“We should be focused on bringing down the cost of housing, health care, and child care, not manufacturing culture wars,” she said. “Delawareans sent me here to make the American dream more affordable and accessible and that’s what I’m focused on.”
House Speaker Mike Johnson told Axios that “we're going to talk about that. We're working on the issue."
