The Night Agent star Gabriel Basso's controversial biopic Hillbilly Elegy has become a hit on Netflix.

The film, which also stars Amy Adams and Glenn Close, is based on the memoir of the same name by JD Vance, and was released on the streamer back in 2020 to largely negative reviews.

However, it has gained a new lease of life, likely due to Vance – who is now an Ohio senator – becoming Donald Trump's running mate for the 2024 US presidential election.

Hillbilly Elegy is the eighth most-watched movie worldwide on Netflix at the moment, largely in the US.

The story focuses on Vance's upbringing in Middletown, Ohio, with Basso playing the older Vance and Adams and Close portraying his mother and grandmother, respectively.

The movie was largely slated by critics upon its release, currently sitting at 25% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, with the Los Angeles Times calling it "an unwieldy slop bucket of door-smashing, child-slapping, husband-immolating histrionics".

Meanwhile, Time Out labelled it an "ill-judged, mind-numbing exercise in Hollywoodsplaining heartland America".

In other news, Basso was recently confirmed to be re-teaming with Netflix on a new project from The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty director Kathryn Bigelow.

The currently untitled movie has few details so far, but will reportedly be set in the White House as a crisis unfolds, with Chernobyl's Jared Harris, Idris Elba and Rebecca Ferguson also set to star.

Netflix's The Night Agent also shared an exciting update, confirming last month that filming on season 2 has wrapped.

The thriller series first dropped in 2023, and was renewed for a second season just days after the first premiered.

Hillbilly Elegy is streaming now on Netflix.
