North Dakota election results: Who won primary races for governor, Congress?

The results are in for Tuesday’s state primary elections in North Dakota, which featured a handful of fiercely contested races for governor, Congress, and the state legislature. For the latest tallies, visit the North Dakota Secretary of State website.

Governor: Rep. Kelly Armstrong secures the Republican nomination

With over 73% of the vote, three-term Republican U.S. Rep. Kelly Armstrong won the Republican primary for governor, beating Lt. Governor Tammy Miller, who outgoing Governor Doug Burgum endorsed.

State senator Merrill Piepkorn, the Assistant Minority Leader who has served in the state legislature since 2016, ran uncontested in the Democratic primary.

U.S. Senate: Three candidates head to the general election in November

Both the Democratic and Republican primaries for North Dakota’s open U.S. Senate seat were uncontested this year.

On Nov. 5, incumbent U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer, a Republican, will face off against Democratic candidate Katrina Christiansen and Kristin Hedger, an independent.

If he wins re-election, this will be Cramer’s second term in the U.S. Senate.

U.S. House: Public service commissioner vs. former teacher

Armstrong is leaving his congressional post, meaning the state’s at-large U.S. House seat is up for grabs this year. Five Republicans and two Democrats ran for his seat, with Republican Julie Fedorchak and Democrat Trygve Hammer emerging victorious.

Fedorchak, who has served on the North Dakota Public Service Commission since 2013, received 46% of the vote, while Hammer, a former teacher and military veteran, received over 73%.

The state primary also included a ballot question on age caps for members of Congress that has captured national attention: The measure was approved by more than 60%, and if legal hurdles are cleared, it will make North Dakota the first and only state to impose age limits on federal lawmakers.
