Only Murders in the Building season 4 spoilers follow.

Only Murders in the Building fans had to do a double take on the latest episode of the show as a beloved actor returned in a different role.

Executive producer John Hoffman, who co-created the series with star Steve Martin, has weighed in on that shocking comeback and explained why it made perfect sense with this season's theme. (Major spoilers ahead.)

Known for its starry ensemble, the recently renewed murder mystery welcomed back season 3 star Paul Rudd in a stunning development.

No, Rudd's bratty actor Ben Glenroy hasn't been brought back from the dead, but it's his Irish stunt double, Glenn Stubbins, who crosses paths with everyone's favourite sleuthing trio.

Episode 4, 'The Stunt Man' sees Charles, Oliver and Mabel visiting a NYC stunt bar to investigate Sazz's murder. There, they meet down-on-his-luck Glenn, who's been out of a job ever since Ben's death.

"I love Paul Rudd, and Paul Rudd loves being on the show, and we're doing a season about stunt doubles," Hoffman told TheWrap.

"We had a season last season where Ben Glenroy died, and who was Ben Glenroy's stunt double is not an unfathomable question. And we have doppelg?ngers all throughout the season," he continued.

"It just like like, 'Oh, my God, that's how we bring him back!' All of that paralleling with Charles and Sazz felt sweet and right, and a beautiful opportunity for Paul to come back."

Hoffman also teased that we haven't seen the last of Glenn Stubbins just yet, as the character is due to pop up throughout the season.

"And there's a lot going on with that character beyond this episode," the showrunner added. "There's more to come."

This season of the acclaimed series follows Charles Haden-Savage (Steve Martin), Oliver Putnam (Martin Short) and Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez) grappling with yet another murder in the building.

As they collect the clues behind the death of Charles' longtime pal and stunt double, Sazz Pataki (Jane Lynch), they get a taste of Hollywood fame when a big studio makes a movie based on their true crime podcast.

Only Murders in the Building streams on Disney+ in the UK and Hulu in the US.
