Parishes hit hard by Hurricane Francine to receive federal assistance

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — It was announced on Tuesday, Sept. 17 that federal assistance is now available for the parishes hit hardest by Hurricane Francine.

Congressman Troy Carter (D-La.) says in response to the Louisiana Delegation’s letter to President Joe Biden, a major disaster declaration has been issued.

The declaration allows for critical individual assistance in Ascension, Assumption, Lafourche, St. Charles, St. James, St. John the Baptist, St. Mary and Terrebonne parishes.

“I am extremely grateful to President Joe Biden for issuing this additional declaration, which will provide much-needed recovery assistance to these hardest-hit parishes,” said Carter. “This aid is vital for helping our communities rebuild and move forward.”

Gov. Jeff Landry said, “This federal assistance is vital to help Louisiana rebuild in the aftermath of Hurricane Francine. I appreciate the hard work our federal delegation, local officials, and our administration put in to get this over the finish line.”

Hurricane Francine made landfall as a Category 2 storm in Terrebonne Parish on Wednesday, Sept. 11. With it came 90 mph winds and a storm surge dropping several inches of rain.

To apply for assistance, residents can visit the Disaster Assistance website.

Additional parishes could be added, pending damage assessment.
