Part of roof ripped from Brook Park rec center during storms

BROOK PARK, Ohio (WJW) – As severe storms rolled through Northeast Ohio, a portion of the roof was ripped off the Brook Park Recreation Center Tuesday afternoon.

“There was a big ‘thud’ and the roof came off the building. A bunch of kids were at that door right there, watching it come off. The roof landed on somebody’s car and they evacuated us to the basement,” said Deven Shehee.

Around 20 people hunkered down in the basement until the storm passed.

According to the recreation center’s director, the roof above the swimming pool suffered the most significant damage.

“Part of it is in our front parking lot, part of it is in our back parking lot. We do have some leaks in other areas that were penetrated from that roof onto other roofs,” said Chris Wetmore.

High winds also caused extensive damage to the nearby baseball field.

The rec center is closed Wednesday and may be closed indefinitely until the city has a full assessment of the damage.
