Penny Lancaster has addressed her veteran rocker husband Sir Rod Stewart's health after reports his "days are numbered", revealing that he is actually in training for a sprinting world record.

The model told her Loose Women co-stars that she found recent reports questioning his fitness "bizarre" because he is actually in great shape and is even getting a sprinting track installed at their home.

Stewart is aiming to break the world record as the fastest 79-year-old in sprinting, giving Olympians a run for their money as he tries to add to his long list of achievements.

Fans might have been concerned by recent headlines that the Maggie May singer had said his "days are numbered" but his wife Penny Lancaster has reassured them that he is in great shape - and is even looking to break a sprinting world record.

Lancaster was back on the Loose Women panel on Thursday, where she gave an insight into what was really going on with her husband and his incredible fitness goal as he approaches his 80th birthday in January.

Looking at recent headlines about Stewart, host Kaye Adams read out: "Rod Stewart admits 'my days are numbered'?"

Revealing his plans to break the world record for the fastest 79-year-old, Lancaster replied: "Bizarre, absolutely bizarre. I don't know where that came from because he's literally sprinting when you imagine someone at 79 would be slowing down. There's no stopping him.

"He's decided he's actually going to try and set a world record in the fastest sprint for a 79-year-old."

Adams asked: "He's seriously going to do this, is he?"

Lancaster, who shares two sons with Stewart, confirmed: "Yeah. He's arranging a soft track at home to practise on. The sky's the limit for him, break that glass ceiling kind of thing. We encourage the boys to always aim high, but they look to their father who's still working and touring the world, so it's like, never give up.

"His motto is 'keep your legs strong, they'll carry you through life'. So it's all about fitness and health and longevity."

The confusion over Stewart's health stemmed from an interview with The Sun in July where he said: "I’m aware my days are numbered but I’ve got no fear. We have all got to pass on at some point, so we are all in the same basket.

"I am going to be enjoying myself for these last few years as much as I can. I say few — probably another 15. I can do that easy mate, easy."

But the rocker has since clarified: "When I said, ‘My days are numbered’, it was purely in jest. Aren’t everybody’s days numbered? I am in embarrassingly wonderful health and enjoying life to the full. I am not dying, as far as I know."

He had to explain the joke after cancelling three US shows earlier this month, leaving fans panicked - although the real reason was that he had Covid, and has been making a good recovery.

Loose Women airs on ITV1 at 12.30pm on weekdays.
