President-elect Donald Trump is preparing to return to the White House after his Nov. 5 victory.
Trump won another presidential term in a remarkable comeback earlier this month. He defeated Vice President Kamala Harris in all seven swing states and won the popular vote after losing to President Joe Biden four years ago.
In just a couple of months, the Republican president-elect will arrive in Washington for his swearing-in ceremony.
Trump has already announced a number of key staff hires, including his White House chief of staff. He’s also announced a number of potential cabinet members who need to be confirmed by the Senate, and met with Biden for nearly two hours as the executive branch transition gets underway.
When will Trump take office?
President-elect Donald Trump will take office on Inauguration Day, which is Jan. 20. The date is set by the 20th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The document states that the term of each elected president begins at noon on Jan. 20 the year after an election.
What happens at a presidential inauguration?
The incoming president takes the oath of office before assuming presidential duties. The president must “solemnly swear” that they will “faithfully execute the office of president of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”
The president also delivers an inaugural address at the ceremony. In his 2017 inaugural address, Trump said he’d stop the “American carnage” of poverty and crime.

The inauguration is held outside the U.S. Capitol building in Washington, D.C.
How many days are left until Trump takes over?
There are 61 days until Trump is sworn in as president on Jan. 20.
How is the presidential vote certified?
Before the president can be sworn in, Congress is required to certify the presidential election results in early January. Governors of individual states certify their election results by mid-December, and then each state’s presidential electors meet to cast their votes.
What happens on Jan. 6?
Congress counts the electoral votes from each state in a joint session on Jan. 6 that includes the U.S. House and Senate.
On the day of the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol in 2021, Trump supporters sought to disrupt the certification process of President Biden’s 2020 victory.
