Rape suspect back in custody after allegedly skipping trial in Tangipahoa Parish

AMITE, La. (WGNO) — A rape suspect is back in custody in Tangipahoa Parish after he allegedly failed to show up for his initial trial date on Monday, July 15.

No arrest one week after 15-year-old’s murder in New Orleans

According to the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office, the suspect, identified by the TPSO as 55-year-old Gerald Stevens, was scheduled for trial in a case involving the third-degree rape of a juvenile from 2021. After he allegedly didn’t appear at the trial, an investigation began in order to locate him.

TPSO officials said Stevens had been seen at a relative’s house on the Wednesday following his trial date. He was allegedly armed with a rifle and making threats about harming himself.

Following the investigation, Stevens was located and taken back into custody on Tuesday, Aug. 6.
