After a year of rebuilding, Huey Learning Center celebrates grand reopening

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Tuesday to celebrate the reopening of the Huey Learning Center in Wichita Falls.

Located next to Scotland Park Elementary School, the Huey Learning Center was destroyed in a severe storm over a year ago.

"About a year ago a microburst came through town and picked up the roof and dropped it down inside — really just laid havoc and destroyed the building," Keri Goins, executive director of Child Care Partners, said.

"We were able to salvage some things out of the building that had been opened in an alternate facility last year, but it's taken us an entire year to get insurance to pay and get the building back to where it was," she said.

The center predates Scotland Park Elementary and has been a home away from home for the kids of Scotland Park for over 40 years now.

And although the kids were initially sad after finding out what happened, the teachers were just thankful that it happened in the evening.

"When they came the next day, the kids were in tears," Goins said. "The teachers were really terrified. I mean if something like that had happened during the daytime. . . . They were just so thankful that it happened in the evening."

Huey Learning Center is nearly complete, but unfortunately insurance was not able to cover everything in the end.

The center still needs smaller items such as toys for the kids. For those who wish to donate, visit the Amazon wish list at "Help Huey," or visit the website: childcarewf.org.
