Recall: Bagged and whole cucumbers sold in Ohio

(WJW) – Check your refrigerator. A recall has been issued on some whole and bagged salad cucumbers sold at select Walmarts in Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Ohio-based company, Wiers Farm Inc. of Willard, voluntarily issued the recall “out of an abundance of caution” because the impacted produce could potentially be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, a serious infection, that sickens about 1,600 people each year and can be deadly.

According to the FDA, so far, there have been no illnesses or consumer complaints reported.

“This product was not grown or harvested by Wiers Farm. It was sourced from out of state, then handled and distributed by Wiers Farm. Wiers Farm Inc. is coordinating closely with regulatory officials in connection with the recall,” stated the FDA notice. “The potential contamination was discovered by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) through routine sampling.”

• Pack Date: June 5, 2024

• Size: 1.5-2.5 inch diameter, 6-9 inch length

Product Name: Wiers Farm 2 lb bagged Salad Cucumber

• Pack Date: June 5, 2024 and June 6, 2024

• Packaging: clear bag with blue base

The FDA notes that the product involved is past its shelf life and should already be out of distribution. Those who still have the product should discard the item(s.)

“Consumers who have consumed the affected product and are experiencing symptoms such as fever, muscle aches, and gastrointestinal issues should seek medical attention. ” the FDA alert states.
