RTD doubling police force to address ongoing violence, crime reports

Fitzgerald was named chief in 2022 and has been part of the organization’s growth from 19 officers when he was sworn in to more than 50 as of March, with more in training. With this expansion, RTD announced that it would start staffing officers 24/7.

Fitzgerald’s son, Christopher, was killed while on duty as an officer at Temple University in February 2023.

More recently, in May of this year, Fitzgerald was named president of the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Association.
