San Diego Comic-Con fans were gutted when the event was cancelled for the first time in its history due to the worldwide coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, but we've got some good news: it's going to go ahead this year after all! Even better, the event will be FREE.

Obviously they can't exactly do it in person, so they are hosting it as a digital event this time around.

An official statement from Comic-Con has teased what fans can expect from the event: "Plans for Comic-Con@Home include an online Exhibit Hall complete with everyone's favorite exhibitors offering promotions, specials, and limited-edition products unique to the celebration.

"As well, Comic-Con@Home promises exclusive panels and presentations about comics, gaming, television, film, and a wide variety of topics from publishers, studios, and more. As if that weren't enough, Comic-Con@Home will also have a Masquerade, gaming, and many other activities in which fans can participate from their own homes."

Previously, the convention's official Twitter feed announced the news that the event would still be going ahead this year, humorously stating: "Coming soon… Free parking, comfy chairs, personalised snacks, no lines, pets welcome, badges for all, and a front-row seat to… Comic-Con at Home!"

When you put it like that it makes you wonder whether we'll ever want to go one in person again. We joke, of course, there's nothing like seeing all the amazing cosplay in person.

In a statement issued in April when the event was cancelled, a spokesperson said: "Extraordinary times require extraordinary measures and while we are saddened to take this action, we know it is the right decision.

"We eagerly look forward to the time when we can all meet again and share in the community we all love and enjoy."

Details about guests, expected trailers and all the rest have not been announced at this time, but we'll be sure to let you know when they are. With so many films delayed and production currently on hold, we can imagine trying to get new things to show off is a bit of a logistical nightmare.

Meanwhile, the convention organisers are hoping to host a regular, in-person event near the end of July next year.

If you purchased tickets for the 2020 event, you can look into getting a refund, transferring your admittance to next year, or wait for further details regarding the digital one. Keep this page bookmarked for further details.

The Avatar sequels and Amazon's The Lord of the Rings series are set to resume production soon in New Zealand, while UK cinemas have said they would like to re-open by the end of June if the government allows it.
